Biography

Ilya Konovchenko was born on May 20, 1915 in the village of Troyandovoye (now - Limansky district of Odessa region of Ukraine ). Before being drafted into the army, he worked as a tractor driver in a machine and tractor station . In 1941, Konovchenko was called up for service in the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army. Since July of that year - on the fronts of the Great Patriotic War. In April 1942 he was seriously injured. Participated in the Battle of Stalingrad and Kursk . By September 1943, the Red Army Ilya Konovchenko commanded the detachment of the 222nd Guards Rifle Regiment of the 72nd Guards Rifle Division of the 7th Guards Army of the Steppe Front . Distinguished during the battle for the Dnieper [1] .

On the night of September 24–25 , 1943, Konovchenko crossed the Dnieper in the vicinity of the village of Borodaevka of the Verkhnedneprovsky District of the Dnipropetrovsk Region of the Ukrainian SSR and took an active part in the battles for the capture and retention of the bridgehead on its western shore. On September 25 alone, Konovchenko’s squad repelled 12 enemy counterattacks. Konovchenko received two wounds, but continued to fight. The department managed to maintain its position until the approach of the main forces, but Konovchenko went missing, probably dying from a direct bomb [1] .

By a decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of October 26, 1943, for “successfully crossing the Dnieper, firmly securing the bridgehead on its western shore and showing courage and heroism”, the Red Army soldier Ilya Konovchenko was posthumously awarded the high rank of Hero of the Soviet Union . He was also awarded the Orders of Lenin and the Red Star , the medal "For Courage" . Forever enrolled in the lists of the personnel of the military unit [1] .
