Biography
Vasily Konnov was born in March 1913 in the village of Kologrivovka (now the Tatishchevsky district of the Saratov region ). After graduating from eight grades of school, he worked in a regional newspaper. In May 1941, Konnov was called up for service in the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army. Since the beginning of World War II - on its fronts. He took part in the battles on the Western , Voronezh , 1st and 2nd Ukrainian fronts. By March 1944, Captain Vasily Konnov was deputy political officer of the battalion commander of the 136th Guards Rifle Regiment of the 42nd Guards Rifle Division of the 40th Army of the 2nd Ukrainian Front. He distinguished himself during the crossing of the Gorny Tikich River [1] .
On May 5, 1944, Konnov raised the soldiers to attack and, dragging him along, threw himself into the river. Crossing it, he led the assault on the German fortifications of the soldiers of the battalion. He managed to knock the enemy out of his trenches and free the village of Antonovka in the Kiev region of the Ukrainian SSR . The enemy launched a counterattack, but Konnov successfully repelled them. As a result, German troops lost several tanks and armored personnel carriers , as well as a large number of manpower [1] .
By a decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of September 13, 1944, for the “courage and courage shown in crossing the Gorny Tikich River”, the guard Captain Vasily Konnov was awarded the high title of Hero of the Soviet Union with the award of the Order of Lenin and the Golden Star medal [1] .
March 2, 1945 Konnov died in the battle for the city of Zvolen in Czechoslovakia . He was buried in Zvolen [1] .
He was also awarded the orders of the Patriotic War of the 1st degree and the Red Star [1] .
