History

The Olympic anthem was first played at the opening ceremony of the I Olympic Games of 1896 . In subsequent years, until the 1956 Olympics in Cortina D'Ampezzo , the host country ordered its musicians to write a new anthem for the Olympics. In 1956, the anthem of Michal Spisak sounded at the Winter and Summer Games. Since 1960, the Olympic anthem of Samaras was again returned, which was mainly performed in the official language of the country where the games were held. The exceptions were instrumental versions performed in 1972, 1992, 2006 and 2012. The anthem was also performed several times in Greek (1976, 1988, 2008, YOI 2010), in addition to this, versions were performed both in the language of the host country and in Greek ( 1980, 2000).

The author of the Russian translation is Robert Rozhdestvensky : the Russian version was performed at the opening ceremony of the XXII Olympic Games in Moscow (1980) and the XXII Olympic Winter Games in Sochi (2014) [1] . The English text below was performed by the Salt Lake City Mormon Tabernacle Choir in 2002.

English (2002 version) [2]Russian (translation by R. Rozhdestvensky)

Olympian flame immortal
Whose beacon lights our way
Emblaze our hearts with the fires of hope
On this momentous day

As now we come across the world
To share these games of old
Let all the flags of every land
In brotherhood unfold

Sing out each nation, voices strong
Rise up in harmony
All hail our brave Olympians
With strains of victory

Olympic light burn on and on
O'er seas and mountains and plains
Unite, inspire, bring honor
To these ascending games
May valor reign victorious
Along the path of golden way

As tomorrow's new champions now come forth
Rising to the fervent spirit of the game
Let splendour pervade each noble deed
Crowned with glory and fame

And let fraternity and fellowship
Surround the soul of every nation

Oh flame, eternal in your firmament so bright
Illuminate us with your everlasting light
That grace and beauty and magnificence

Shine like the sun
Blazing above
Bestow on us your honor, truth and love

Antiquity an immortal spirit, your children ask:
Come soon, sparkle in the heavens, light our hearts!
Antiquity beautiful spirit, you are the eternal planet
For the glory and in the name of the whole, all the good Earth!

Stone throwing and struggle, and debates in fast running,
Find out who in the fair fight is the best and the first to become.
Crown it with a wreath of ceremonies, crown it with a wreath
Victory!
Let him be worthy - a hero - stand on a pedestal!
May he be worthy to stand on a pedestal!

Flashed the vastness of the earth,
Rivers and valleys and mountain peaks.
Open to all the winds again
This sunny temple!
The immortal, proud spirit of antiquity -
Fire is fiery and eternal!

You burn with humanity in fate
And not without reason worships you,
And it is not for nothing that he protects you [Comm. 1] ,
Every nation
Every nation!
Keeps You [Comm. 2] , keeps you
And, the whole earth!
