Pseudo-abyssal

Pseudo - abyssal is the ecological zone of the oceans , which is a deep-sea in-shelf depression - a kind of large internal basin of the shelf zone, separated from the continental slope by a shallow threshold - the outer edge of the shelf . The term “pseudo-abyssal” was restored in 1974 and 1979 by the Russian ichthyologist A. P. Andriyashev in works devoted to the vertical zoning of the marine bottom fauna, primarily the fish fauna [1] [2] . The pseudo-abyssal zone is located within the continental shelf between the sublittoral and bathyal at depths of the order of the abyssal — usually more than 2,500-3,000 m, while the typical abyssal is located off the shelf and is an ocean bed . The pseudo- abyssal differs from pseudobatials similar in origin in significantly greater depths.

The species composition of bottom and bottom-pelagic fish, as well as other benthic hydrobionts inhabiting the pseudo-abyssal, is very different from the fauna of this abyssal, because it is represented mainly by coastal (neritic) species that penetrate noticeably larger in this zone than usually depth. Pseudo-abyssal biotopes include isolated basins in the Arctic Ocean basin , as well as the Japanese and Mediterranean seas , connected to the ocean by shallow straits [3] .
