Biography

Alexander Kolchin was born on September 5, 1922 in the city of Novaya Ladoga (now the Leningrad Region ). He graduated from seven classes of the school, then three courses of the Mining and Metallurgical College in Ridder . In October 1942, Kolchin was called up for service in the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army. Since July 1943, on the fronts of World War II, he was a line supervisor of the telegraph and cable company of the 79th Separate Communication Regiment of the 47th Army of the Voronezh Front . He distinguished himself during the battle of the Dnieper [1] .

When, on the night of October 18-19, 1943, as a result of a close tear of a German shell, the communication line between the army command and units on the west coast was broken, Kolchin, without waiting for an order, got into a boat and began searching for the ends of the broken wire. During enemy shelling, the boat sank, and Kolchin continued to swim. He was in cold water for about half an hour, managing to detect both ends and restore communication. On October 20, 1943, Kolchin, under continuous air raids, corrected a failed communication line at the observation post of the army commander and the Dnieper crossing, due to which uninterrupted communication was ensured [1] .

By decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of January 10, 1944 for "courage, bravery and heroism shown in the struggle against the German invaders," Junior Sergeant Alexander Kolchin was awarded the high title of Hero of the Soviet Union with the award of the Order of Lenin and the Gold Star medal number 3049 [ 1] .

In 1946, the rank of senior sergeant Kolchin was demobilized. He lived in Leningrad . After completing the courses of drill masters, he worked first as a senior drill foreman, then as a senior geological engineer, head of the geological party. He died on June 14, 1973, was buried at the Bolsheokhtinsky cemetery in St. Petersburg [1] .

He was also awarded a number of medals [1] .
