Biography

Egorov as secretary of religious and philosophical gatherings is described as follows: “Egorov belonged to the type of paradoxical people who at that time were quite common. According to his public convictions, he was a populist, admirer of Gorky and Mikhailovsky , but this did not prevent him from taking the place of secretary in religious and philosophical meetings and collaborating in the New Time, where in April 1904 he completely transferred from the Merezhkovsky magazine to the role of department head foreign policy. However, in the editorial office of the New Way, his work was primarily technical in nature and did not significantly affect the ideological face of the magazine. ” [2] .

In 1903-1904 closely communicated with VV Rozanov [3] .

In October 1911, together with the second second, A. A. Pilenko (also an employee of New Time), tried to convey to V. D. Nabokov the call of journalist N. V. Sessarev , whose insulting note caused the conflict and the call to the chief editor of the newspaper M. A. Suvorin Nabokov to a duel. The challenge was not accepted, as Nabokov considered Sessarev to be inactive [4] .

In February-March 1917 he participated in a trip of leading Russian journalists to England. In addition to Yegorov, who represented New Time, the delegation included: V. D. Nabokov ( “Speech” ), V. I. Nemirovich-Danchenko ( “Russian Word” ), A. N. Tolstoy (“ Russian News ”), K. I. Chukovsky (“Niva”) , A. A. Bashmakov (“Government Gazette”) [5] . It is characteristic that Nabokov in a photograph placed in his essay "From Warring England" (Petrograd, 1916), poses next to Egorov. This, apparently, should have emphasized that Nabokov and Egorov retained, at a minimum, professional relations [4] .

Reviews about it

Zinnaida Gippius

[Egorov] “the doors of the Meetings were guarded like a real“ dog ”. Watched the reports. <...> With Lavra spiritual censorship, Yefim also made friends, which was valuable, especially when our magazine New Way began ” [6]

Recommending Yegorov, Ternavtsev laughed gaily: “It’s better not to invent a secretary. Artful dog! Astonishing! Sixties; neither believes in God nor in hell! ”What kind of“ sixties ”he was there is hard to say, but his ability to handle“ priests ”and his friendship with Antonin , the then spiritual censor, were really useful. Bosom friendship; walked around the taverns together, and the Lavra Gate was locked - Antonin spent the night at Yegorov. There was something in common between friends. Some roughness, wildness ... [7]

And immediately became friends with the “priests”. Especially with Archimandrite Antonin. Together they wandered around the taverns - where Efim certainly ordered himself a fasting meal, Antonin was certainly indomitable; They ran together to us; if Antonin was “late” in the city, then he spent the night at Yefim [8] .

Korney Chukovsky

The fifth [in the delegation of journalists] is the modernist Egorov. He has a sore ear, he is tied up with some black rag, his face is chewed, everything is wrinkled, his dress is careless, - type from the painting of Makovsky [9]
