Biography
The brother of the composer, academician of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR Filaret Kolesa and folklorist and ethnographer Ivan Kolesa .
Associate Professor (since 1895) and Professor (1898-1918) of the University of Jan Casimir in Lviv.
Since 1899 - an active figure in the Scientific Society. T. Shevchenko . Member of the Ukrainian People's Democratic Party . The author of the words of the song "Naughty, naughty, told kati" (1889, in the Russian translation known as "Dare, tyrants").
In 1907-1918 he was elected to the parliament of Austria-Hungary . One of the organizers and deputy chairman of the General Ukrainian Council in Vienna.
Actual chairman of the All-Ukrainian Cultural Council .
In 1921 - head of the ZUNR diplomatic mission in Rome . From 1921 until the end of his life he was in exile in Prague.
In 1923-1939 - teacher at Charles University in Prague. One of the organizers, professor and repeated rector (1921-1922, 1925-1928, 1935-1937, 1943-1944) of the Ukrainian Free University in Prague.
Full member of the Scientific Society. T. Shevchenko (since 1899) and the Slavic Institute in Prague.
Daughter - pianist Lyubov Kolesa .
Scientific activity
A. Kolesa - a researcher of monuments of ancient Russian writing ("Yuzhnovolynsk Gorodishche and Gorodische manuscripts of the 12-16 centuries"), folklore ("The main directions and methods in the study of Ukrainian folklore"), studied the history of the Ukrainian language ("Views on the history of the Ukrainian language" ), problems of Ukrainian literary criticism (“A look at the current state of the history of the study of Ukrainian literature”) and new Ukrainian literature (works by T. Shevchenko , M. Shashkevich , Yu. Fedkovich ).
