Biography

He came from the family of an official and a merchant's daughter. He graduated from a city school in Frankfurt, already from childhood becoming interested in both classical languages ​​and contemporary German literature. In 1758-1760 he studied law in Jena , in 1760-1762 in Altdorf . In 1762, he received his doctorate in law and began law practice in his hometown. From 1766 he was the personal secretary of Duke Friedrich Eugene Württemberg , in 1769 he returned to law practice, from 1773 he served as a lawyer (from 1774 - bailiff) at the Baden court.

On November 11, 1773 he married Johann Wolfgang's sister Goethe Cornelia, after the latter's death in 1777, he married again a year later.

In 1782-1783 he belonged to the Bavarian Illuminati Society, then joined the Freemasons, in 1786 becoming a venerable master. In 1787 he was appointed Privy Councilor in Rastatt, in 1790 he headed the Privy Council, but due to disagreements with the government in 1794 he was forced to resign. In the last years of his life he was engaged in translations and studies.

He worked a lot at the Frankfurt Gelehrte Anzeigen, where he printed translations from Greek classics. His works: Seutyes oder der Monarch (1788); Kleine Schriften (1779-1794, 6 volumes).
