Biography
Sharmila Reg was born on October 7, 1964 in Pune ( Maharashtra , India ).
Career
Sharmila joined the Krantijyoti Savitribai Phule Women's Studies Center (Department of Gender Studies) at the University of Pune, where she has held a position since 1991 . Received the Malcolm Adisesia Award for Distinguished Research Contribution from the Madras Institute for Development Research (MID) in 2006 .
She was one of the leading feminist scholars in India , whose pioneering work, including the monograph Describing Caste , Describing Gender : Reading the Evidence of Women from the Untouchable Caste ( 2006 ), played a decisive role in opening up feminist debates in Indian society on class, caste, religion and sexuality.
Death
Sharmila, 48, died July 13, 2013, after a brief fight with colorectal cancer .
