Biography
Giovanni Cornaro was the son of Marcantonio and Cecilia Giustiniani [1] . Before becoming a doge, Giovanni had a mediocre and boring career behind - it was obvious that he could not occupy such a high post.
He was the captain in Verona , Padua Padua ( 1600 ) and Brescia ( 1603 ), the manager, and even became the procurator of San Marco ( 1609 ) (pre-paid for this post). But, according to some chronicles, he was more obliged by his posts to his noble origin than to personal qualities.
On the contrary, despite his weak abilities, he was rich and had, according to the old custom, connections with the Church.
He married Chiara Dolphin, who also came from a Doge family. They had six sons and six daughters. Giovanni gave his sons lucrative and influential positions.
Giovanni Cornaro, satisfied with his position and the success of his children, was not going to become a candidate for the doge after the death of his predecessor Francesco Contarini , he only sought to continue his affairs and spend his last years in peace, but fate had a completely different future for him.
Board
After fierce clashes between old and new families ( case vecchie and case nove ), Giovanni Corner was unanimously elected by the Doge on the 42nd round of voting on January 4, 1625 .
After their election, his sons Alvise and Francesco (the latter married the daughter of the former Doge Antonio Priuli ) retained their posts as senators, which was not permitted by Venetian law. After the rapprochement of his father with the Vatican, with whom Kornaro always maintained good relations, Federico's son Corner became bishop of Vicenza and a cardinal. The fourth son of Marcantonio became a priest in St. Mark's Cathedral . The youngest, Giorgio, distinguished himself by circumventing the trade laws of Venice. In the end, one of Corner's cousins became an adviser to the Doge.
In 1627 , Reniero Zeno , a member of the Council of Ten , began to criticize the Cornaro family for increasing their concentration of power in their hands. Zeno, who managed to uncover the illegal activities of Antonio Priuli, threatened the doge with custody and demanded the creation of a special commission. To get rid of him, Kornaro broke the law: on December 30, 1627, Reniero Zeno was seriously wounded by Giorgio Kornaro and his accomplices in the Doge’s Palace (whom Zeno, incidentally, accused of trading in smuggled goods. Giorgio escaped from the city and then was expelled; his immovable the property was arrested, then Zeno began to publicly criticize and blame his enemies. On July 23, 1628 , Cornaro interrupted one of these public appearances and caused unrest throughout the city, trying, with the support of his allies, to expel Reniero from Ve On September 17, 1629 , the Quarantina General court adjourned the execution of the sentence against Zeno, then the Doge party suffered serious defeats, and he even put forward a proposal for his resignation, but it was rejected.
A new war loomed in Monferrath , but at that time the Doge was no longer able to rule the country.
Giovanni Corner died a few months later, on December 23, 1629 . He was buried in the family chapel in the Venetian church of San Nicolo da Tolentini .
