History
In 1901, the Territory filed an application for the acquisition of city status. This status was obtained in 1906 and immediately after that, by order of the newly elected burgomaster Ludwig Kolen , a competition of projects for the construction of the building of the city Magistrate begins. The project of the architect Otto Mecke ( German Otto Mecke ) was selected from among 89 applicants. Construction began on July 3, 1907 . At that time, the Krai municipality was one of the richest in Germany, which was reflected in the rich architecture and decoration of the building under the town hall. The construction of the town hall was completed in 1908 and on October 1, its grand opening took place.
On August 1, 1929, Krai became part of the city of Essen and the town hall lost its functions as the administrative building of the magistrate, but after the Second World War , when the building of the city hall of Essen was destroyed, until 1979 the city magistrate of Essen met in the city hall of the Krai. After the opening of the building of the new Essen Town Hall, several departments of the city administration remained to work in the Krai Town Hall. Also in the building are the police department of the south-eastern part of Essen, the registry office and the youth affairs department.
In 1985, the Krai Town Hall building was included in the list of state-protected monuments.
