Biography

In 1948 he graduated from school in Rezekne and entered the Catholic seminary in Riga . March 29, 1951 ordained priests . He worked in the parishes of Riga. He taught at the Theological Seminary and was a consultant to the Archbishop of Riga and secretary of the liturgical commission.

Since 1972 - chaplain of His Holiness . In 1979 - 1984 he was the vicar general in the curia of the Riga diocese. In 1984, at the request of the Soviet authorities, he left the post in the Curia and worked as a simple priest. May 8, 1991 appointed Archbishop of Riga.

On June 1, 1991, he was ordained archbishop. February 21, 1998 was elevated to the Cardinals in pectore . February 21, 2001 announced on the consistory. Cardinal priest with the title of the church S. Silvia . Member of the 2005 conclave .

In addition to the Latvian language , he speaks Russian , Polish , Lithuanian , German and Latin .

On June 19, 2010, Cardinal Puyats was announced to be Archbishop of Riga, and his successor was nominated Zbigniew Stankevich - Director of the Riga Higher Institute of Religious Sciences and Theological Seminary of the Riga Metropolitanate. Until August 21, 2010 - the day of the intronization of Zbigniew Stankevich, Cardinal Puyats remained the apostolic administrator of Riga.

On November 14, 2010, Cardinal Puyats was 80 years old and he lost the right to participate in the Conclaves .
