Biography
Astra Kurme grew up in the city of Ilukste, Daugavpils district of the Latvian SSR, studied at a school with a strong teaching of the exact sciences. After graduating from school with honors, in 1984 she entered the Latvian State University at the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics [1] , was engaged in biophysics according to an individual plan under the guidance of Edgar Imanta Silins . She graduated from the university in 1990 with a master's degree in solid state physics.
After graduation, she began working at the Riga Medical Institute on the topic of neurophysiology. But in the early 1990s, she left science and received a new education at the Institute of International Relations at the University of Latvia, re-opened in Latvia (1993-1994). Since 1993, her diplomatic service began.
Since 1993, Astra Kurme is a senior assistant in the department of European politics; since 1994, she has been participating in negotiations with the European Commission .
In 1995 he was appointed 2 Secretary of the Embassy of the Republic of Lithuania in the Kingdom of Belgium .
Since 1997 - 2 secretary of the Latvian Delegation to the EU .
Since 1999, has been acting as 1 secretary of the Negotiating Group on Latvia’s EU accession.
In 2000-2001 - Director of the Department of Finance and Property of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
In 2001-2004 - Director of the EU Department.
In 2004-2005, the head of the Bureau of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador on Special Assignments.
In 2005-2006 - Deputy State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for European Affairs.
From 2006 to 2011, the Ambassador of Latvia in Italy and part-time in Malta , in San Marino and Albania [2] . At the same time, envoy to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization.
In 2011-2013, Deputy Foreign Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Administrative Director.
Since October 2013 - Ambassador of Latvia to the Russian Federation .
Since August 2017 - Latvian Ambassador to the United Arab Emirates.
Life position and hobbies
Neurophysiology has remained a hobby for Astra Kurme for life. “I follow the latest in the world, for experiments and discoveries, because our brain is an amazing substance. In the next life, I will definitely be engaged in neurophysiology, ”she says. [1] .
