Creation History

The two-stage PH 11A59 was developed pursuant to Decree of the Central Committee of the CPSU and the Council of Ministers of the USSR No. 258-110 of March 16, 1961, by branch No. 3 of OKB-1 (now TsSKB-Progress ) on the basis of the R- 7A ”(GUKOS index - 8K74).

Test work on the development of the processes of separation of the IP object (the working name of the I-2V devices) from the second stage of the 11A59 launch vehicle was carried out at the flight test and development base in Zhukovsky [3] .

Design Features

The 11A59 launch vehicle was developed on the basis of the R-7A by creating a fundamentally new design and type of warhead. A fundamental technical innovation was the fact of using a detonation cord around the body to discharge the head part [3] .
