Content
History
The settlement from which the city and municipality later grew was founded on August 16, 1748 by don José Lazaro de Rivera.
Geographical position
The city is located in the southern part of the department, west of the East Cordillera ridge, east of the Magdalena River , at a distance of approximately 240 kilometers south-west (SSW) from Valledupar , the administrative center of the department. The absolute height is 151 meters above sea level [1] .
The municipality of Aguachica borders in the northwest with the municipality of La Gloria , in the northeast - with the department of Northern Santander , in the east - with the municipality of Rio de Oro , in the southeast - with the municipality of San Martin , in the southwest - with the territory of the department of Santander , in the west - with the municipality of Gamarra and the territory of the department of Bolivar . The area of the municipality is 936 km² [2] .
Population
According to the National Administrative Department of Statistics of Colombia, the total population of the city and municipality in 2012 was 89,935 people [3] . The dynamics of the population of the municipality by years:

According to the 2005 census, men accounted for 48.5% of the city's population, women - 51.5%, respectively. Racially, whites and mestizos accounted for 96.2% of the city's population; Negroes , mulattoes and Raysals - 3.7%; Indians - 0.1% [4] . The literacy rate of the entire population was 81.3%.
Economics
Aguachiki's economy is based on agricultural production .
56.3% of the total number of urban and municipal enterprises are trade enterprises, 35.6% are service enterprises, 7% are industrial enterprises, 1.1% are enterprises of other sectors of the economy [4] .
