Museum of the Paris Mint

The Museum of the Paris Mint ( French: Musée de la Monnaie de Paris ) is a numismatic museum located in the 6th arrondissement of Paris . The museum collection consists of coins and medals from all eras of French history - from antiquity to the present day.

Content

History

In 1827, King Charles X of France issued a decree establishing the Museum of Money . Six years later, on November 8, 1833 , King Louis Philippe officially opened a museum at workshops engaged in the minting and engraving of coins and tokens.

In 1984, a special department was established at the museum to service professional numismatists.

In 1988, the Museum of Money got its current name as the Museum of the Paris Mint.

In 1991, the museum was divided into three departments:

  • Department of Antiquity
  • Department of the Middle Ages
  • Department of Modern and Contemporary History

From 2011 to 2017, the museum was closed for restoration work [1] .

Collection

The museum's collection includes more than 30,000 coins of various eras and peoples, as well as 75,000 medals, tokens and insignias. In addition to the numismatic collection, the museum displays paintings, prints, sculptures and equipment for minting coins. The museum’s archive contains 13,020 books, 98,400 scientific articles, 1,454 manuscripts and 18,227 other documents relating to the history of French finance.

A souvenir shop is open for visitors and two workshops are opened in which anyone can see the process of producing medals or coins.
