History

The name of the city comes from the word yolde , which in Fula means settlement on a dais . Yola was founded in 1841 and developed as the administrative and political center of the Adamawa emirate when the founder of the Emirate of Fula, Moddibo Adama , founded the Yola settlement for the Fulbe jihad against the indigenous peoples of Bath (Batta) and Vere (Verre ).

In 1891, Lieutenant Louis Mizon, persuaded the emir to recognize French territorial claims. By 1893, the British extended their control over this part of the emirate, and shortly thereafter, the Royal Niger Company established a trade office in the city. In 1901, Emir Lauwal Zubeiru forced the company to leave Yola, but after the intervention of the British expeditionary units, the position of the British and the Royal Niger Company were restored.

In 1914, the German colonialists invaded Yola from Cameroon , but the British kept the city.

The city has the Federal University of Technology (founded in 1981), the central mosque and the Roman Catholic Church.

Built airport.
