Biography

Nikolai Grigorievich [1] Leikov was born in 1878.

In 1900, after graduating from the Marine Engineering School of Emperor Nicholas I in Kronstadt , he was promoted to junior mechanical engineer and assigned to the Varyag armored cruiser, which was built in Philadelphia ( USA ) at the Kramp factory .

As part of the crew of the Varyag cruiser, the senior ship's mechanic, assistant to the senior mechanical engineer N. G. Leikov made the transition from America to Russia to the Baltic , and then to the Far East . [2]

At the very beginning of the Russo-Japanese War of 1904-1905 , the cruiser Varyag and the gunboat Koreets were in the neutral Korean port of Chemulpo . January 27 ( February 9 ), 1904, they took an unequal battle with the ships of the enemy. The fight lasted 50 minutes. During this time, the "Varangian" fired 1105 shells at the enemy, but he himself received 5 submarine holes, Z1 the sailor was killed, about 200 people were injured. Unable to continue the battle, the ship returned to Chemulpo. The entire crew of the cruiser showed courage and dedication during the battle. By the highest order of February 23, 1904, the assistant to the senior mechanical engineer N. G. Leykov was awarded the Order of St. George IV degree .

On January 26, 1909, Lt. Col. N.G. Leikov committed suicide on the basis of a mental disorder. The death certificate was compiled by a former senior doctor of the cruiser "Varyag" college adviser Mikhail Khrabrostin. Buried N. G. Leikov at the Mitrofanievsky Orthodox cemetery in St. Petersburg . [3]

Leikov worked in the GKO apparatus, fulfilling government tasks for the production and supply of ammunition for the fronts of the Great Patriotic War.
