Alexander Mikhailovich Beresh ( Ukrainian: Oleksandr Mikhailovich Beresh ; October 12, 1977 , Pervomaisk , Lugansk region - February 29, 2004 , Obukhov highway, near Kiev) - Ukrainian gymnast, silver and bronze medalist of the 2000 Summer Olympics.

Career

Early years

He began to do gymnastics in the sports complex "Youth". The first coach of Beresh was Nina Kolesnikova , a trainer in the Pervomaisk Youth Sports School. Six months later, I came to Leonid Gurov . Until the second grade he also played football, later, by the decision of Gurov, he chose gymnastics.

He studied at the Lugansk sport boarding school for some time, then returned home. Soon he began to study under the leadership of Igor Pisarenko . At the first competitions in the Lugansk region he took the third prize and the first in physical training.

Team Debut

After several years of training, he moved to the Kherson Sportinernat, where Igor Pisarenko was invited as a head coach. In the sixth grade, he fell into the reserve team of Ukraine. At 17, he made his debut in the first team. Under the leadership of Igor Korobchinsky, he won a number of awards at the World Championships, Europe and the Olympic Games.

International fame

He played in the national team since 1994 under the tenth and eleventh numbers. In 1996, he received an elbow injury and quickly recovered, went to college. Meanwhile, the leadership changed in the team: Vladimir Shamenko , who had an argument with Beresh, became the head coach. He eventually stopped going to training and went to school. After the removal of Shamenko and the arrival of Anatoly Shemyakin to the position of head coach, Beresh returned to the team.

In 1997, international competitions were held in Hungary, where Ukraine was represented only by Beres, who won. In 1997, at the World Championships he took 9th place. Speaking against Ivan Ivankov and Alexei Nemov , Beresh took third place on the crossbar. From 1998 to 1999, Beresh won the Grand Prix many times, but at the official world and European championships he failed.

In 2000, Korobchinsky invited Beresh to train for himself. Under his leadership, in 2000, Beresh became the absolute champion of Europe, and in Sydney he won the team silver medal and bronze in the all-around. Since 2001, he has not performed in the all-around because of pain in the shoulders. In 2004, he was planning to win a gold medal as part of the Olympic team and return to all-around.

Doom

On the evening of February 29, 2004, Beresh, along with teammate Sergei Vyaltsev, was returning to Kiev from the Olympic base in Koncha-Zaspa with a Peugeot 307 car, where he was visiting his friend. During a trip to the Obukhov highway near Kiev, Beresh's car had an accident, colliding with a BMW 740 with the numbers of the Verkhovna Rada. At the wheel was Natalya Martynyuk, daughter of the First Deputy Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada Adam Martynyuk [2] . Beresh died on the spot.

Every year in Ukraine, a tournament is held in memory of Alexander Beresh: October 12, on Alexander’s birthday, it takes place in Pervomaisk, and on February 29, on the day of his death, in Kherson . Valery Goncharov, the winner of the parallel bars competition in Athens, dedicated his gold medal to Alexander Beresh.
