Biography
Nikolai Kozhanov was born on December 25, 1909 in the village of Zalomaevo (now Gorodetsky district of the Nizhny Novgorod region ). After graduating from three classes of the school, he worked as a molder at the Balakhna Paper Mill. In 1940, Kozhanov was called up for service in the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army. He participated in the battles of the Soviet-Finnish war, being the gun commander of the 271st motorized rifle regiment of the 17th motorized rifle division of the North-Western Front [1] .
In the period from February 8 to March 13, 1940, Kozhanov participated in battles for the seizure of important strongholds of the Finnish troops and supported the fire of his guns with attacks of rifle units, suppressed pillboxes and firing points [1] .
By decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of April 7, 1940, for the "exemplary performance of command missions on the front against the Finnish White Guard and courage and heroism shown at the same time," the younger commander Nikolai Kozhanov was awarded the high title of Hero of the Soviet Union with the award of the Order of Lenin and the Gold Medal Star ” under number 403 [1] .
He participated in the battles of World War II. In 1945, with the rank of lieutenant, Kozhanov was transferred to the reserve. He lived in the village of Pravdinsk (now within the city of Balakhna, Nizhny Novgorod region), worked at the Balakhna pulp mill. He died suddenly on August 25, 1956, and was buried in the Kubentsovskoye cemetery of Pravdinsk [1] .
He was also awarded a number of medals [1] .
In honor of Kozhanov named street in the city of Gorodets [1] .
