Description of the monument

Alley with a monument

The monument is a laboratory mouse with glasses, shifted to the tip of the nose, which sits on a granite pedestal. The mouse holds knitting needles and knits a double helix of DNA . The height of the bronze figure of the mouse is 70 cm, the total height of the monument with a pedestal is 2.5 meters. It should be noted that the helix coming out from under the spokes of a mouse is left-handed (the so-called Z-form , it has not been studied much, so there is much room for scientific thought to develop), whereas the main forms of DNA are right-handed. It is about them that are told in school, because schoolchildren during excursions to the monument are often asked the question: what is unusual they notice in the DNA helix depicted on the monument?

Creation History

The foundation stone of the monument was laid on June 1, 2012 in honor of the 55th anniversary of the founding of the Institute of Cytology and Genetics. The Novosibirsk-based artist Andrei Kharkevich, who created more than ten sketches, worked on the image of a mouse. Among the different variants of the classic and stylized image of an animal, a mouse was knitted, knitting a DNA helix on knitting needles.

“The images of the laboratory mouse and the scientist are combined here, because they are interconnected and serve the same cause. The mouse is captured at the time of scientific discovery. If you look into her eyes, you can see that this mouse has already invented something. But the whole symphony of scientific discovery, joy, “ eureka !” Has not yet begun to sound. ”

so described the image of Andrei Kharkevich.

The sculptor Alexei Agrikolyansky, who brought the idea to life, admitted that it was not easy to do, because the mouse is still not a human being, and for her it was necessary to invent emotions, character, find something between a cartoon character and a real mouse, comply with its anatomical options.

The sculpture was cast in bronze in Tomsk by master Maxim Petrov.

The technical director of the landscaping project was Sergey Lavryushev, Deputy Director of the Institute of Cytology and Genetics of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

The sculpture was established by the Institute of Cytology and Genetics of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences with the financial participation of the Medico-Biological Union CJSC and Diaem LLC. [one]
