Stabilized wood , or polymerized wood , or stabilized wood - wood , fully impregnated with special solutions ( fillers ) in order to improve its physical and operational properties. Stabilized (polymerized) wood has found wide application in the manufacture of handmade knife handles and the decoration of vape devices.
Manufacturing
In the manufacture of stabilized wood, voids, fibers and capillaries of wood are maximally freed from moisture and are filled with impregnating compounds. In this case, a vacuum vacuum is applied, followed by high pressure, during which the material being prepared is completely immersed in the impregnating solution. During the process of making stabilized wood, dyes can also be dyed in different colors by introducing dyes into the impregnating composition, which allows obtaining a wide range of color shades.
Drying of the impregnated wood is carried out at a certain temperature conditions. During drying, the heat treatment of the workpiece is applied, during which the complete polymerization and solidification of the liquid impregnating compositions, by which the wood is processed, takes place.
The process of making stabilized wood in the manner described is costly and time consuming, and therefore stabilized wood is obtained as an expensive material and is not of interest for widespread industrial manufacturing. To date, stabilized wood is produced with small-sized blanks, which are used to manufacture the handles of knives and various decorative handicrafts.
To stabilize the wood used wood with a pronounced fine texture and overflow. Most often, these are traps of such trees as maple , chestnut , elm , birch , as well as some valuable species of wood , such as Karelian birch . The stabilized wood made of fruit and exotic woods , such as rosewood , apricot , and walnut , looks very nice.
Properly made stabilized wood is very resistant to environmental factors: it does not change its appearance and does not lose color under the influence of ultraviolet rays, technical oils, organic solvents; it can withstand heating with an open flame to a temperature of 250 degrees Celsius for some short time without external changes.
