Biography

Alexander Koy was born on February 25, 1935 in the village of Ghana, Opole Voivodeship, Poland. From 1951 to 1957 he studied medicine at the medical faculty of the Cracow Medical Academy. In 1961 he received a doctorate in medical sciences. In 1969 he became a habilitated doctor, defending the work “Wpływ urazu na szybkość syntezy fibrynogenu” at the Department of Biochemistry (The effect of trauma on the rate of fibrinogen synthesis). In 1976 he became a doctor of natural sciences. The research interests of Aleksand Koy were in the field of enzymology, immunology, molecular biology and clinical pathophysiology.

From 1953 to 1967, Alexander Koy worked as a researcher at the Department of Physiological Chemistry of the Krakow Medical Academy, then moved to the Department of Biology and Sciences of the Jagiellonian University. Since 1976 he was an extraordinary professor and since 1990 an ordinary professor. At the same time, he periodically worked at universities in Canada and the USA. From 1977 to 1981, Alexander Koy was director of the Institute of Molecular Biology of the Jagiellonian University. From 1986 to 1993, he was the head of the department of animal biochemistry and in 1994 became director of the metabolism regulation laboratory. From 1984 to 1987 he was vice-rector of the Jagiellonian University.

Alexander Koy was three times the rector of the Jagiellonian University (1987-1990, 1993-1996 and 1996-1999).

In 1989, Alexander Koy became a member of the Polish Academy of Knowledge and in 1991 a member of the Polish Academy of Sciences.

In 2005, retired.
