The eldest of the three sons of Prince Ivan Lobanov-Rostovsky from marriage with Princess Ekaterina Kurakina , niece of the courtroom Nikita Panin . Due to external dissimilarity with his father, there were rumors in the society that the brothers Alexander, Dmitry and Yakov Ivanovich became the fruit of the princess’s relationship with the Kalmyk servant [1] .
Perhaps for this reason, Prince Lobanov emphasized his descent from Rurik . According to P.V. Dolgorukov , having arrived in Rostov the Great, he reminded the mayor that he was the eldest descendant of the Rostov specific princes, and demanded to meet him at the city gates at the sound of all the bells [2] . This trick caused the disapproval of the imperial court.
In 1797, he was elected the Moscow provincial leader of the nobility , in September 1800 he was removed from office by decree of Paul I because of "groundlessness." Judging by the letters of A. Ya. Bulgakov , he was a great lover of billiards and was extremely annoyed when he lost the game. After the death in 1819 of the wife of Anna Nikiforovna (nee Maslova, according to more reliable sources by Mosolova), he married a second time, but had no more children.
Prince Lobanov’s sharp and unflattering character did not allow him to make such a brilliant career as his younger brothers did. A sign of the prince's bad mood for the household was that he began to wander around the house, whistling the melody of Turlututu, chapeau pointu [2] . He was buried near his parents in the Church of the Sign of the Novospassky Monastery .
Children
From his first marriage he left three sons and five daughters: two Catherine, Varvara, Anastasia (wife of S. E. Lyapunov) and Praskovya (wife of A. V. Novosiltsev) [3] . His sons are as follows:
- Lobanov-Rostovsky, Alexey Alexandrovich (1787-1848), Senator, Ryazan Governor
- Lobanov-Rostovsky, Ivan Alexandrovich (1788-1869), Senator, Actual Privy Councilor
- Lobanov-Rostovsky, Boris Alexandrovich (1794-1863), chamberlain, Voronezh leader of the nobility, father of the Minister of Foreign Affairs
