A 364 km long canal connects the Brest raid in Brest and the Loire river in Nantes . 238 gateways were built throughout the system. Part of the canal passes through the natural reservoirs of Brittany .
The idea of building a canal arose in the XVI century, but its construction began only during Napoleon , when the British fleet was off the coast of Brittany . In 1836, a movement was opened from Brest to Kare and from Nantes to Redon . The canal was fully opened only in 1858 by Napoleon III . [one]
In 1923, after the construction of the Gerledan Dam, 17 canal locks flooded the waters. Because of this, the exploitation of the section from Kare-Pluger to Pontivy stopped. For the rest of its length, the canal is still used today.
