Dragescu, Mariana

Maria Ana Aurelia (Mariana) Dragescu ( Roman Marie Ana Aurelia (Mariana) Drăgescu ; September 7, 1912 , Craiova - March 24, 2013 , Bucharest ) is a Romanian pilot from World War II, a member of the White Squadron , the unit responsible for transporting the wounded. Until recently, it was the last surviving pilot of this Squadron [1] [2] . Although in many countries women could be pilots, only Romania allowed its pilots to carry out tasks related to the delivery of the wounded [3] .

Mariana became a pilot at the age of 23 years [2] , which for those times was an amazing achievement [2] . She joined the squadron in 1938 shortly before the war [3] along with four friends: Virginia Ducescu , Nadia Russo , Marina Stirbey and Irina Burnaya [3] . Participated in the operations of the Romanian troops near Odessa and Stalingrad, in 1944-1945, already as part of the Union Army, fought on the side of the Anti-Hitler coalition as part of the liaison. In the post-war years after the Communist Party came to power, it was forgotten due to cooperation with the Nazis, however, after the overthrow of the regime, Ceausescu again attracted attention [2] .

Died March 24, 2013 at the age of 100 years [2] .
