History

After the victory of the Reformation in Denmark, Catholicism was banned. The 1569 law on the supervision of immigrants harshly suppressed any entry of Catholic missionaries into the country, and the law of 1624 directly prohibited the appearance of Catholic priests in Denmark under the threat of the death penalty. After the end of the Thirty Years War, this law was slightly relaxed, Catholic priests were allowed to serve as chaplains at the embassies of Catholic countries. From 1648 to 1659 a poet and diplomat Bernardino de Rebolledo served as a chaplain during the Spanish mission in Denmark.

In 1764, a Catholic chapel was founded on Bredgad at the place where the modern cathedral building is located. The chapel served mainly diplomats from the Holy Roman Empire , its construction and maintenance was financed by the Empress Maria Theresa .

Mitigation of religious policy in the country occurred in the middle of the XIX century, freedom of religion in the country was fully restored in 1849 after the adoption of a democratic constitution and the transition to a constitutional monarchy ; however, already in 1840, it became possible to begin the construction of the building of the Catholic church on the site of the Austrian courtyard

Cathedral interior

The neoclassical style temple was built in 1840–1842 according to the design of German architect Gustav Frideric Heche . On November 1, 1842, the temple was consecrated.

After April 29, 1953, the apostolic vicariate of Denmark was transformed into the diocese of Copenhagen , which includes not only the whole territory of Denmark itself, but also Greenland and the Faroe Islands , the Cathedral of St. Ansgar became the cathedral of this diocese.

From 1988 to 1992, restoration work was carried out in the cathedral. The reliquary to the right of the altar of the Virgin Mary, according to church tradition, contains the skull of Pope Lucius I.

Architecture

The Cathedral is a single-nave basilica in neoclassical style. The length of the temple is about 31 meters, width and height - 13 meters. The church is designed for about 300 seats. The benches in the cathedral have not changed since its construction, so that on some of them you can still see the coat of arms of the Habsburgs , under whose auspices the church was originally located.

Stained glass windows of the cathedral were created in 1885-1894. The cathedral has an extensive collection of ancient paintings and sculptures.
