Angelo Caroselli. Allegory of love

The master’s work is a combination of diverse artistic styles, in which the influence, first of all, of caravagists and bambochads is noticeable.

Biography

The son of an art dealer. Art historians write that Carozelli was self-taught, did not receive special training, was not connected with the masters of painting, did not have a patron, and with great difficulty made a career, although poorly paid. Possessed a strong character, sought to please the ladies. [1] .

Already in 1604, his name was included in the list of the Academy of St. Luke . However, in 1605 he was excluded from the register of the Academy after the adoption of an article according to which the minimum age of the artist was raised to 30 years. Such was the fate of self-taught artists such as Caroselli, with whom the conservative majority of the Academy fought.

Carozelli, like Caravaggio himself, began in the ranks of census takers and restorers , and had a reputation as a great imitator who presented his fake work as originals. Effectively copied the work of Titian and Raphael . He painted paintings on religious and mythological topics.

Nicolas Poussin could not distinguish Caroselli's Madonna from the original of Raphael .

In search of work, left Rome and went to Florence and Naples , where he spent several years.

After returning to Rome, he was accused of trying to sell fakes created by him in the style of great masters. In this connection, enjoyed a low reputation.

He brought up several famous students, including Pietro Paolini and his son Carl Caroselli.

Among his works, the most famous are the images of St. Peter and St. Andrew for the Montecalvario church in Naples, the holy prophets on the ceiling of the chapel in Santa Maria in Valicella , three canvases for the chapel, to the left of the entrance to Santa Francesca Romana in Rome. In the Roman church of San Gregorio Magno in Celius , he wrote the painting “The Beating of Saints and Martyrs in Japan”. His painting by St. Wenceslas in the Quirinal Palace is known.

Carozelli also studied optical effects in painting. On the canvas "The Witch with a Concave Mirror", you can see the reflection of the artist himself behind the easel .
