Biography
Xenophon Koval was born in 1903 in the village of Zasinovka (now the Gornostaevsky district of the Kherson region of Ukraine ). In 1944, he was called up for service in the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army. Since February of the same year - on the fronts of the Great Patriotic War. By November 1944, the Red Army soldier Xenophon Koval was a shooter of the 610th Infantry Regiment of the 203rd Infantry Division of the 53rd Army of the 2nd Ukrainian Front . Distinguished himself during the liberation of Hungary [1] .
On the night of November 6-7, 1944, Koval was one of the first to cross the Tisza River in the area of the Sharoud settlement southwest of Tisafüred and took an active part in the battles for the capture and retention of the bridgehead. In those battles, Koval personally destroyed more than 20 enemy soldiers and officers. When the regiment commander began to sink in the water of Tisza, Koval saved him. November 21, 1944 Koval died in battle. He was buried in the town of Verpelet , 11 kilometers southwest of the city of Eger in Hungary [1] .
By decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of March 24, 1945, Red Army soldier Xenophon Koval was posthumously awarded the high title of Hero of the Soviet Union . He was also posthumously awarded the Order of Lenin [1] .
