Biography
Dmitry Koval was born on February 25, 1918 in Moscow . At an early age he moved to Tashkent , where he graduated from seven classes of school and worked as an apprentice mechanic. In 1936, Koval was called up to serve in the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army. In 1939, he graduated from the Tambov Aviation School of the Civil Air Fleet, in 1940 - the Odessa Military Aviation Pilot School . From January to May 1942, he served as a pilot of the 8th Fighter Aviation Regiment. From June 1941 - on the fronts of the Great Patriotic War [1]
By May 1943, Lieutenant Dmitry Koval was the senior pilot of the 45th Fighter Aviation Regiment of the 216th Mixed Aviation Division of the 4th Air Army of the North Caucasus Front . On May 8, 1943, he died in battle near the stanitsa of the Crimean Krasnodar Territory . During his participation in the battles, Koval made 127 combat sorties, took part in 26 air battles, shooting down 12 enemy aircraft in person and another 3 in the group [2] .
By decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of May 24, 1943, Lieutenant Dmitry Koval posthumously was awarded the high title of Hero of the Soviet Union . He was also awarded the Order of Lenin , the Red Banner and the Red Star </ ref> [3] .
In honor of Koval installed his bust in the park of the village of Kalininskaya [3] .
