Biography

Fedor Aleksandrovich Afanasyev was born on April 23, 1898 in the village of Falileevo, Yamburg district, St. Petersburg province (now in the Kingisepp district of the Leningrad region).

Civil War

From January to March 1918 he served in the ranks of the Red Guard as head of the horse intelligence of the Kronstadt Red Guards Combined Detachment. He fought on the southern front .

In August 1918, he was drafted into the ranks of the Red Army and was appointed to the post of military commissar of the Seinen volost of the Yamburg district of Petrograd province. Since May 1919, he served as the Red Army soldier of the Gatchina Combined Regiment of the North-Western Front , and then was appointed to the post of instructor in the political department of the 2nd Infantry Division of the Army of the Soviet Latvia . He took part in the battles against troops under the command of N. N. Yudenich and the armed forces of bourgeois Estonia .

In August 1919 he was appointed chairman of the Ilyinsky Revolutionary Committee of the Yamburg County, from October of that year he served in the 6th Infantry Division as a Red Army soldier, then as responsible party organizer of the 46th Infantry Regiment, from May 1920 - military commissar of the 52nd Infantry Regiment, and since October - Commissioner of the 17th Infantry Brigade. As part of the 6th Infantry Division, he fought near Petrograd against troops under the command of General N.N. Yudenich, and also took part in the Narva offensive operation. In the summer of 1920, Afanasyev took part in the Soviet-Polish war in the Polotsk , Warsaw and Grodno directions. From the end of 1920 to the beginning of 1921, he fought against armed groups in the regions of Lepel and Senno .

Interwar

With the end of the war, Afanasyev was appointed to the post of military commissar of the 6th Infantry Division as part of the Oryol Military District , and since October 1922 he was in the reserve of the political composition of the Moscow Military District . In April 1923 he was appointed to the post of instructor of the Tver Provincial Political Secretariat, in May 1925 to the post of instructor-organizer of the political department of the 48th Infantry Division , in October 1926 to the post of military commissar of the 252nd, and then the 251st Infantry regiments.

In October 1928, Afanasyev was sent to study for advanced training courses for senior political personnel at the Military-Political Academy , after which in June 1929 he returned to the post of military commissar of the 251st rifle regiment.

In April 1931 he was sent to study at the MV Frunze Military Academy , after which he was appointed in May 1934 to the post of chief of staff of the rifle brigade, in January 1936 - to the post of commander of the 166th rifle regiment ( Leningrad Military district ). In May 1938, Fyodor Afanasyev was transferred to the reserve, but in May 1939 he was reinstated in the ranks of the Red Army and appointed to the post of teacher of the Military Transport Academy of the Red Army. Being the head of the division of the operational department of the headquarters of the 9th Army , he took part in hostilities during the Soviet-Finnish war . In May 1941, he was appointed head of the combat training department of the headquarters of the 27th Army , which was formed as part of the Baltic Military District .

World War II

At the beginning of World War II, Colonel Afanasyev was in the same position on the North-Western Front , took part in defensive battles in the Pskov , Kholm and Demyan directions.

In February 1942, Fyodor Afanasyev was appointed commander of the 3rd Airborne Corps , which completed the formation and then was transformed into the 33rd Guards Rifle Division , which since July has been part of the 62nd Army ( Stalingrad Front ) participation in defensive battles on the outskirts of Stalingrad .

In August 1942, Colonel Afanasyev was appointed to the post of commander of the 5th Airborne Corps ( Far Eastern Front ), in November - to the post of commander of the 34th reserve rifle brigade ( Moscow Military District ), in September 1943 - to the post of chief of staff 27th Guards Rifle Corps , in August 1944 - to the post of commander of the 9th Guards Airborne Division , and in January 1945 - to the post of commander of the 395th Rifle Division , which took part in the Berlin and Prague offensive operations .

In October 1945, Colonel Fyodor Afanasyev left the reserve. He died on August 23, 1971 in Leningrad and was buried with military honors in the Shuvalovsky cemetery .
