Alexander gardner eng. Alexander Gardner (October 17, 1821 - December 10, 1882) was a Scottish photographer who emigrated to the United States in 1856. Most famous for his photographs of the US Civil War, US President Abraham Lincoln and the execution of the organizers of the Lincoln assassination .

Born in Paisley , Renfrewshire . From 14 to 21 he was a pupil of a jeweler. Belonged to the Church of Scotland . He was fond of Robert Owen , shared the ideas of socialism and dreamed of creating a cooperative in the United States, in which socialist ideas would be embodied. In 1850, he acquired land in Iowa , but did not live there, wishing to stay in Scotland and make money from the cooperative. In 1851 he became editor of the newspaper Glasgow Sentinel ; in the same year, he visited the World Exhibition in London and was interested in the work of the American photographer Matthew Brady in photography [6] .
In 1856, he and his family emigrated to the USA; Upon learning that many of the participants in the cooperative he had created died of tuberculosis, he decided to stay in New York, where he began working as a photographer, first under the leadership of Matthew Brady, and soon on his own. Fame acquired since 1862 with his photographs of the battles of the Civil War in the country, which in 1866 were published in the two-volume edition of Gardner's Photographic Sketch Book of the Civil War .
Gardner also took seven lifetime photos of President Lincoln, several photos of his funeral. He was the only photographer allowed to take photographs of conspiracy plotters to assassinate Lincoln and the very moment of their execution by hanging. After the end of the war he created a whole cycle of photos of Indians of various nations that gained fame. In 1871 he left a photo and created an insurance company in Washington, living there until the end of his life.
Currently, some photographs of Gardner during the Civil War are recognized by staging specialists [7] .
