Biography

Nikolai Kovalev was born on December 10, 1914 in the village of Orekhovnya [1] (now the Iznoskovsky District of the Kaluga Region ). He graduated from elementary school, after which he was a worker in an orphanage. In May 1941, Kovalev was called up for service in the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army. Since June of that year - on the fronts of the Great Patriotic War. By September 1943, Junior Sergeant Nikolai Kovalev was in command of the anti-tank rifle division of the 75th Infantry Regiment of the 31st Infantry Division of the 46th Army of the Steppe Front . He distinguished himself during the battle of the Dnieper [2] .

On the night of September 26-27, 1943, Kovalev crossed the Dnieper in the area of ​​the Soshinovka village of the Verkhnedneprovsky district of the Dnepropetrovsk region of the Ukrainian SSR and took an active part in the battles for the capture and retention of the bridgehead on its western shore. In that battle, Kovalev’s squad destroyed 2 artillery pieces, 7 machine guns and a large number of enemy soldiers and officers [2] .

By decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of February 22, 1944, Junior Sergeant Nikolai Kovalev was awarded the high title of Hero of the Soviet Union with the award of the Order of Lenin and the Gold Star medal [2] .

In October 1945, with the rank of foreman, Kovalev was demobilized. He lived and worked first in the village of Sayansk , in 1970 he moved to Alma-Ata . He died on October 5, 1986 [2] .

He was also awarded the Order of the Patriotic War of the 1st degree and a number of medals [2] .
