Biography
Nikita Kovalev was born on December 20, 1909 in the village of Mayskoye (now Zhlobin district of the Gomel region of Belarus ). After graduating from three classes of the school, he worked as a driver in Zhlobin . In 1931, Kovalev was called up for service in the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army . In 1937 he graduated from the Ulyanovsk Tank School. Since February 1942 - on the fronts of the Great Patriotic War. By November 1943, Major Nikita Kovalev commanded a battalion of the 21st Guards Tank Brigade of the 5th Guards Tank Corps of the 38th Army of the 1st Ukrainian Front . He distinguished himself during the battle of the Dnieper [1] .
On November 1, 1943, during battles at the bridgehead on the western bank of the Dnieper in the vicinity of Novye Petrovtsy village, Vyshgorod district, Kiev region of the Ukrainian SSR , the Kovalev battalion liberated this village, destroying 11 tanks, 2 self-propelled artillery installations, 14 mortars, 12 artillery pieces. In the period from November 3 to 8, 1943, the battalion destroyed 6 more enemy tanks, 50 artillery pieces and mortars, 124 machine guns, a large number of other military equipment and manpower [1] .
By a decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR dated April 24, 1944, Major Nikita Kovalev was awarded the high title of Hero of the Soviet Union with the awarding of the Order of Lenin and the Gold Star medal [1] .
Later Kovalev participated in the Soviet-Japanese war . After graduation, he continued to serve in the Soviet Army. In 1945 he graduated from advanced training courses for command personnel, in 1953 - the Leningrad Higher Armored School. In 1955, with the rank of colonel, he was transferred to the reserve. He lived and worked in Minsk . He died on May 10, 1978 [1] .
He was also awarded two Orders of the Red Banner , the Order of the Red Star , and a number of medals [1] .
