Biography
Simon Kobets was born on February 15, 1922 in the village of Viktorovka (now Mankovsky District, Cherkasy Region of Ukraine ). After graduating from high school, he worked as a laboratory assistant at a grain preparation center, then, after completing driver courses, a driver of the Mankovsky squad. In the Red Army since 1941. Member of the Great Patriotic War since 1941. He began his service as a telephone operator in the artillery division, then as a shooter. In 1943 he graduated from junior lieutenant courses. He took part in the battles on the Leningrad and 1st Baltic fronts, was wounded four times. In 1943, Kobets graduated from junior lieutenant courses. By July 1944, Lieutenant Semyon Kobets commanded a platoon of the 588th Infantry Regiment of the 142nd Infantry Division of the 23rd Army of the Leningrad Front. He distinguished himself during the battles on the Vuoksa River [1] .
On July 9, 1944, Kobets, at the head of a reconnaissance detachment, crossed the Vuoksa and carried out reconnaissance of the German defense, delivering important information to the regiment command. During the battles for the bridgehead, the Kobets platoon, gaining ground in positions, held them for ten hours, repulsing 22 enemy counterattacks. During one of the counterattacks, Kobts’s platoon saved the commander and regiment headquarters from imminent death, preventing the enemy from breaking through to the command post, destroying about 50 enemy soldiers and officers [1] .
By decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of March 24, 1945, for “exemplary fulfillment of the command assignments and the courage and heroism shown at the same time”, Lieutenant Semyon Kobets was awarded the high title of Hero of the Soviet Union with the award of the Order of Lenin and the Gold Star medal number 7699 [1] .
After the war ended, Kobets was fired to the rank of senior lieutenant. He returned to his native village, where he worked as chairman of the village council, as a team leader on the collective farm. He died on November 24, 1973 [1] .
He was also awarded the orders of the Patriotic War of the 2nd degree and the Red Star , a number of medals [1] .
In honor of Kobts named secondary school [1] .
