The New Guinea stamp is the official means of payment of German New Guinea in 1894-1911.
Release History
Initially, in the colony, the official form of payment was the gold mark . In 1894 [1] after lengthy negotiations, the central government agreed to the introduction of local currency. The New Guinean mark was equivalent to gold. The coins of the new currency in their characteristics fully corresponded to the German mark. Their circulation was small.
The New Guinean brand did not last long. On April 1, 1899, the colony government refused to continue minting coins. On April 15, 1911, this monetary unit was demonetized [2] .
The history of the New Guinean brand did not end with its demonetization. In 1914, after the outbreak of World War I, the territory of the German colony was occupied by Australia . Stamps were issued for this territory. The following 1915 they were replaced by the Australian pound .
