Biography

Maria Immaculata Louise was born in the palace of the Royal Palace in Caserta - the huge palace of the Neapolitan kings in Campania . The godmother of the newborn was Maria Louise Carlota of Parma . When the princess was 4 years old, her father died. Mother raised her daughter. In total, the family had twelve children.

In 1860, the princess with her family was forced to leave the country, since the troops of Garibaldi were approaching Naples. The family moved to Rome, where they briefly lived at the Quirinal Palace at the invitation of the Pope.

From childhood, the young princess was known for her piety. In the summer of 1867, an epidemic of cholera broke out, which claimed the life of her mother on August 8, and then her younger brother Gennaro on August 13.

After the death of her mother, the princess moved with her sisters to the palace of Farnese , the residence of her half- brother-king . There she studied Italian, French and German, studied oil painting and watercolor.

In October 1867, Garibaldi reached Rome. Maria Louise and her sister Maria Pia were granted asylum in the Apostolic Palace .

In 1870, Rome was attacked by the troops of the Italian king. The sisters were forced to leave for France.

On November 25, 1873, the princess married the French prince Heinrich of Bourbon-Parma , Count Bardi. He was the son of Charles III , Duke of Parma and the French Princess Louise Maria Theresa . Heinrich’s older brother, Robert , was married to Princess Maria Pie, Maria ’s elder sister, from 1869.

After the wedding, the couple decided to go on a honeymoon to Egypt. There the princess fell ill with a fever. The couple decided to return back to France. March 30, 1874 they arrived in Marseille . The fever did not pass and the princess moved to the city of Pau in the Atlantic Pyrenees, where she died on February 23, 1874.

Maria Immaculata is buried in the chapel of the Villa Borbone in Viareggio . Henry entered into a second marriage with the Portuguese infante Aldegunda . The marriage was childless. He died in 1905.
