History
Opened to the public in 1947 at the site of the training center for the training of military personnel for the Royal Tank Regiment , an armored unit of the British Army, which had existed since 1916. After the end of the First World War, several samples of tank equipment were preserved in good condition in Bovington, which was later replenished with equipment from the Second World War. It was decided to create a tank museum on this site.
Now in the museum’s collection there are more than 300 units of tanks from 30 countries, which is one of the largest collections in the UK [1] . The museum is the largest in Dorset, its collection has the status of an object of national importance [1] [2] . Among the museum’s collections, there is a British heavy tank of the First World War period “ Mark I ” and a German heavy tank of the Second World War period “ Tiger ” (Panzerkampfwagen VI Ausf. N “Tiger”), and Soviet equipment is also presented.
