Lucy Hey, Countess Carlisle

Lucy Haye (née Percy), Countess of Carlisle (1599 - November 5, 1660), was a court lady, known for her beauty and wit. She participated in many political intrigues during the English Civil War ( Eng. English Civil War ).

In 1626 she was appointed the chamber-maid of honor Queen of England Henrietta Maria .

Personal life

Lucy Percy was the youngest daughter of Henry Percy, Earl of Northumberland (known as "The Sorcerer's Earl") and his wife Lady Dorothy Devereux .

In 1617 she married James Hay, Earl of Carlisle.

Her charm was sung by her contemporaries in verse ( Thomas Carey , William Cartwright , Robert Herrick, and John Sackling ) and prose (Sir Toby Matthew).

She was a prominent figure at the court of King Charles I. She was also the mistress of Thomas Wentworth and John Pym, his parliamentary opponent.

Later - the abandoned mistress of the Duke of Buckingham , who became Richelieu's agent of jealousy.

Interesting Facts

Considered one of Milady’s (Lady Winter’s) prototypes in Alexander Dumas’s novel The Three Musketeers .
