Biography
Alexey Knyazev was born on May 9, 1923 in the village of Bronnitsa [1] (in 1931-1963 the village was called Msta, now it is part of the Novgorod district of the Novgorod region ). Prior to being drafted into the army, he worked in the fire department of the Proletary village, located on the opposite bank of the Bolshaya Nisha River from Bronnitsy. In September 1941, Knyazev was called up for service in the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army . Since November of that year - on the fronts of the Great Patriotic War. He took part in the battles on the Reserve , Western , Stalingrad , Don , Bryansk , Central and Belorussian fronts [2] .
By December 1943 of the Guard, Senior Sergeant Aleksey Knyazev was in command of the machine-gun company of the 215th Guards Rifle Regiment of the 77th Guards Rifle Division of the 61st Army of the Belorussian Front. He distinguished himself during the battles for the liberation of the Gomel region of the Byelorussian SSR . On December 3, 1943, during the battle for the village of Veliky Avtyuki, Kalinkovichi district, Knyazev inflicted heavy losses on the enemy with his machine gun fire. When his machine gun was destroyed by the tracks of an enemy tank, he continued to fight off grenades. In that battle he died. He was buried in Great Autukyuk [2] .
By decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of June 3, 1944, for the "courage and heroism shown during the liberation of Belarus" of the guard, senior sergeant Aleksey Knyazev was posthumously awarded the high rank of Hero of the Soviet Union . He was also awarded the Order of Lenin and the medal "For Courage" [2] .
Memory
Streets in Proletary and Kalinkovichi were named in honor of Knyazev [2] , in Bronnitsy, a memorial plaque was erected on the house where he lived and a sports prize named after Alexei Arsenievich Knyazev was established.
