Biography

Parents are Guyanese. In 1962 - 1972 he lived in Guyana with his grandmother. He graduated from the University of Kent with a degree in African and Caribbean Studies ( 1985 ). He began working at the University of Warwick on a dissertation on the work of Wilson Harris , but, having won scholarships to the place of a guest writer in Cambridge and Birmingham , he gave up his dissertation and took up independent work. He spent two years ( 1989 - 1990 ) in Cambridge, then another two years - as a guest writer in Amherst . He taught at Bates College ( 1994 - 1995 ), at the University of Miami . In 2003, he received a position as a professor of English literature and a co-head of an MA in art at the Virginia Polytechnic .

Creativity

He made his debut in 1985 with a book of poems that attracted the attention of critics. In 1994, he published the historical novel The Longest Memory , which received a number of awards.

The novels of the writer are translated into many languages, including Hebrew.
