Biography

Born in the family of a forester in Tambov. After studying at a school in his hometown, he entered the philological faculty of the Moscow Pedagogical Institute .

In 1932 it began to be published [1] . Since 1933, he was an employee of the newspapers Pravda , Komsomolskaya Pravda , the magazines Novy Mir and Literary Heritage [2] . He was also an employee of the magazine “Book and the proletarian revolution” [3] .

He worked for more than 30 years at the state scientific publishing house Soviet Encyclopedia . He is the author of numerous articles in the 2nd and 3rd editions of the Great Soviet Encyclopedia , as well as one of the initiators and creators of the Brief Literary Encyclopedia (1962-1978), and the first personal encyclopedia in Russian - Lermontov Encyclopedia (1981). His first publication on the work of M. Yu. Lermontov appeared back in 1939 [2] .

He was considered a connoisseur and propagandist of Russian literature of the XIX century [2] . He took part in the creation of the collection “Poets-Petrashevists”. In the series “Life of remarkable people”, Zhdanov’s books “N. A. Dobrolyubov ”(1951, 1955, 1961),“ Nekrasov ”(1971) and“ Life of Nekrasov ”(1981). He is also the author of the essay on the life and work of N. V. Gogol (1953, 1959), the book “Poets Petrashevists” (5 editions from 1940 to 1957). Repeatedly his works were reprinted [3] .

In the 1960s and 1970s, Zhdanov often visited Tambov, and gave lectures to students.

Vladimir Viktorovich Zhdanov died on February 9, 1981 in Moscow.
