Biography
Peter Klimenko was born on May 24 (new style - June 5 ) in 1911 in the village of Pyatikhatki (now a city in the Dnipropetrovsk region of Ukraine ). He received an incomplete higher education, worked as a wagon master at home. In 1934 - 1935 he served in the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army . At the beginning of World War II, Klimenko was sent to evacuation to Sverdlovsk , where he worked as an engineer in the local carriage industry. In March 1942, he was re-drafted into the army. Since 1943 - on the fronts of World War II. He took part in the battles on the Leningrad and 1st Ukrainian fronts, was wounded and shell-shocked twice. By January 1945, Lieutenant Pyotr Klimenko commanded a company of the 543rd Infantry Regiment of the 120th Infantry Division of the 21st Army of the 1st Ukrainian Front. Distinguished himself during the Vistula-Oder operation [1] .
On January 23, 1945, Klimenko’s company was among the first to break into Oppeln (now Opole ), after it was liberated, crossed the Oder on ice and entered into battle with the enemy, forcing him to retreat. The company successfully captured the bridgehead on the west bank of the river and held it until the approach of the main forces. In those battles, Klimenko personally destroyed about 20 enemy soldiers and officers [1] .
By a decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of April 10, 1945, for “courage, bravery and heroism shown in the fight against the German invaders,” Lieutenant Pyotr Klimenko was awarded the high title of Hero of the Soviet Union with the award of the Order of Lenin and the Gold Star medal number 6028 [1 ] .
In 1945, Klimenko graduated from advanced training courses for command personnel. In 1946, with the rank of senior lieutenant, he was transferred to the reserve. He lived first in Chisinau , then in the cities of Sarny and Kovel , worked as the head of local car depots. He died on November 8, 1970, is buried in Kovel [1] .
He was also awarded orders of the Patriotic War of the 1st degree, the Red Banner of Labor , the Red Star , and a number of medals [1] .
