Biography

The surname Garai came from the village of Gara / Goria (modern Gorjani village near the town of Djakovo in Croatia ). Garay were Hungarians by origin, but since they often controlled the southern regions of the Hungarian kingdom , the Slavic pronunciation of the surname was more often used.

Nicholas II Garai was a representative of the old and noble Hungarian family Garai. This family was present in royal surroundings and played a prominent political and military role. From 1402 to 1433 he ruled Hungary , as well as Slavonia , Croatia and Dalmatia . Also through his vassals he ruled in Branichevo , Srem , Bachka , Banat and Baranje .

Together with his close ally Szibor of Sziborzyce , he became one of the richest and largest feudal lords in Hungary for over 30 years. Miklos II Garay was the de facto ruler of Hungary next to King Sigismund .

He showed himself mainly as a prominent politician in Hungary . In 1396 he participated in the Nikopol Crusade . After the defeat of the Crusaders from the Ottoman Turks near Nikopol in Bulgaria, Miklos Garay, together with the Hungarian king Sigismund of Luxembourg, sailed from the battlefield in a ship. Then Nicholas Garay was sent by Sigismund to rule Hungary during the absence of the king. In 1416, Sigismund Luxembourg decided to consolidate their relationship, introducing Nicholas in the number of knights of the Order of the Dragon . It should be noted that Miklos Garay and Sigismund initiated the creation of this order, and it was he who insisted that among the tasks of the order his charter spelled out the requirement to protect the king and the royal entourage from conspiracies. A knighthood patent was also granted to Nicholas Garay.

Family

Nicholas II Garai and was twice married. His first wife was Elena (Theodora) Lazarevich (d. 1405 ), the second daughter of Serbian despot Lazar Hrebelyanovich ( 1329 - 1389 ) and Militsa Nemanic (c. 1335 - 1405 ).

In 1405, he remarried to Anna Zilli ( 1384 - 1439 ), daughter of Count Herman II von Zilli ( 1365 - 1435 ) and Countess Anna Schaunber (c. 1358 - 1396 ), sister of Barbara Zilli , second wife of the Hungarian king and German emperor Sigismund of Luxembourg . Children from the second marriage: Dorota (d. 1443 ), Barbara (Elizabeth), Vladislav (Laszlo) ( 1410 - 1459 ) and Janos (d. Before 1432 ).

His eldest son, Laszlo II Garay ( 1410 - 1459 ), was the Palatine of the Kingdom of Hungary ( 1447 - 1458 ). Having concluded an agreement with the Hunyadi clan, he initially supported the candidacy of Matthias Hunyadi (Corvin) for the royal throne of Hungary. However, later, when Hunyadi did not comply with the terms of the deal, the Garai family, together with their supporters, opposed Matyash Hunyadi (Corvin) . The granddaughter of Nicholas - Anna Garai - was engaged to Matthias Corwin , but the matter did not come to the wedding.
