Spassk (Karaganda region)

Spassk ( Kazakh. Spassk ) is a village in the Abay district of the Karaganda region of Kazakhstan . It is part of the Kurminsky rural district. It is located about 30 km east-southeast (ESE) from the city of Abay , the administrative center of the district, at an altitude of 581 meters above sea ​​level [1] . The KATO code is 353263300 [2] .

Population

In 1999, the population of the village was 145 people (76 men and 69 women) [3] . According to the 2009 census , 73 people (38 men and 35 women) lived in the village [3] .

History

In the 50s. XIX century in Spassk was built a smelter [4] . Its history is closely connected with the Karaganda basin , whose coal provided the needs of the plant. In 1907, the coal mines of the basin were taken over by the Spassky Copper Ore Joint-Stock Company, founded in London by Jim Herbert.

May 11, 1918 V.I. Lenin signed a decree of the Council of People's Commissars of the RSFSR on the nationalization of the Spassky smelter and other enterprises. In the late 1910s. the factory was closed.

Karlag’s department was located in Spassk, and during World War II, the NKVD of the USSR organized special camp No. 99, which contained over 70 thousand foreign prisoners of war of approximately 40 nationalities [5] [6] . The prisoners of the Spassky branch of Karlag were Rochus Mish and Ahiko Tetsuro [6] . A memorial to the victims of Karlag has been unveiled [7] . Spassk is the training center of the reserve of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Kazakhstan [8] [9] .
