Story

In the Dutch village, where patriarchal traditions are strong, widower Fred lives. He is an exemplary community member and parishioner of the local church. At one time, he kicked his son out of the house for being homosexual . Fred meets Theo the tramp and out of compassion settles him at home. Soon, a friendship develops between them, in which the neighbors mistakenly perceive a sexual background. As a result of clashes with others, Fred will eventually be able to understand and accept his son.

The director of the film emphasizes that this story is not about conflict with social norms, not about the breakdown of stereotypes, but about the internal conflict of a person, about self-awareness as you are, and liberation. [one]

Criticism

GayRussia.Ru and Gay.ru drew attention to the film receiving prizes at the 35th Moscow International Film Festival , while Russia passed laws banning "propaganda of homosexuality" [2] [3] . A number of critics consider this a demonstration of opposition to the government’s policy [4] [5] According to the Moscow Film Festival program director Kirill Razlogov , “representatives of the FSB in charge of culture” expressed dissatisfaction with the fact that the film was selected for the festival competition and received a spectator prize [6] .

Rewards

  • 35th Moscow International Film Festival :
    • Audience Award [7]
    • Prize of the Guild of film critics and film critics [8]
  • Rotterdam Film Festival 2013:
    • Audience Award [9]
