Story
Frank Sears is an ordinary teacher with an unusual past. When he was 10 years old, his mother cut out Frank on his right hand symbols: "Sub-level 3, compartment 12". Immediately after that, she committed suicide, also killing Father Frank.
After 40 years, he learns that the secret military research base in New Mexico , where his father and mother worked, wants to deactivate and build a casino in its place. Decontamination implied complete cleaning of all premises of the base, inspection of all materials and destruction. Frank goes there to prevent a catastrophe: he feels that something terrible is hidden in sublevel 3 of compartment 12. But he is denied access to the base, citing the lack of a pass.
In the meantime, the inspection and cleaning of the base rooms is coming to an end. The groups work in plastic, hermetic suits - to protect against radiation. Sers still gets to the base, where he asks to check sublevel3 / compartment 12 again. First, they find an empty, already proven room, but after tapping the wall and drilling it, they find another compartment. There is a large titanium container, hermetically sealed. The group opens it and first finds the corpses of rats in solution, the monkey, and then the person. On his body is a huge tumor, in which lieutenant Freeborn, a scientist, sees signs of a growth regulation center. The discovery is photographed, and then when she tried to take a sample of the infected tissue, she showed aggressive signs of activity. The detachment is hastily evacuated and is trying to close the container, but it is too late: the body broke free. Very soon, the entire base becomes infected, almost all the staff is killed by the body, quickly penetrating into all living and nonliving.
Carrie Freeborn, whose husband also died, and Frank Sears head south, where they meet an old Indian man and his granddaughter. He also worked on this base, and he knows where something is hidden just for the occasion. In the abandoned church, Carrie and Frank find a filmstrip on film. In order to view it, they run to a nearby school, where they also find a chemical laboratory.
While Carrie is studying a sample of the body, Frank is watching a movie. It turns out that his father was a completely different person, the Russian scientist Yevgeny Tarasov, who developed biological weapons, first in the USSR and then in the US (after not recognizing his research in the USSR). He created a perfect organism that cannot be destroyed, feeding on any energy, even radioactive. Eugene also received a meager amount of antidote, later lost. Later, after introducing the organism into himself, he went mad and was buried in that very container. Carrie, analyzing the body, reports that he has signs of animal, plant and bacterial cells combined. Frank accidentally becomes infected, the body quickly captures it, but soon dies. Frank and Carrie understand that the antidote is not lost - Frank's mother introduced him to his son shortly before his father died. Cut a finger with a penknife, drops of blood Sers kills a sample of the body.
In the vicinity of the base, the population is evacuated, and the progressive organism grows faster and faster - 1.7 km in diameter in these few hours. A little later, the headquarters make a terrible discovery: in the IR spectrum, it is clear that the body grows under the ground, and even faster than on the surface and already over a larger area. The military are trying to fight the spread of the body, but in vain.
Frank and Carrie are in a panic: three hours before dawn (after sunrise the growth of the body will increase hundreds of times and will swallow the whole Earth soon) Suddenly, Carrie recalls that her late husband noticed signs of a growth regulation center in that tumor on Kunetsov’s chest. They decide to destroy the center with Frank's blood, and then the body will die. Frank smears Carrie with his blood so that she does not become infected, and together they return to the base. Soon, Frank discovers his father's body. Cutting his whole hand with a knife, he sheds his blood right into the center, and the body dies. His dead vines on the surface slowly crumble to dust.
