Biography
Pavel Kitchenko was born on August 17, 1913 in the village of Kachalovka (now the Krasnokutsky district of the Kharkiv region of Ukraine ).
After completing eight classes of school and one course of pharmaceutical school, Kitchenko worked on a collective farm . In 1930, he moved to the town of Shakhty in the Rostov Region , where he graduated from a mining school and worked as an electrical fitter at a mine.
In 1936 - 1938 he served in the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army . In 1940, Kitchenko was again drafted into the army, participated in the battles of the Soviet-Finnish war . In June 1941, he was called up for the third time. In 1942, Kitchenko graduated from the 2nd Kharkov Tank School. Participated in the Battle of Stalingrad , in October 1942 was wounded. Returning to the front after the hospital, Kitchenko participated in the liberation of the Ukrainian SSR . By October 1943, Lieutenant Pavel Kitchenko commanded a platoon of the 586th tank battalion of the 219th tank brigade of the 1st mechanized corps of the 37th army of the Steppe Front . Distinguished during the battle for the Dnieper [1] .
On the night of 1 to 2 October 1943, under a massive enemy fire, a platoon of Kitschenko crossed the Dnieper near the village of Mishurin Rog, Kremenchug district, Poltava region, Ukrainian SSR, and took an active part in the liberation of a number of nearby settlements. The enemy made 19 counterattacks, but the tankers successfully repulsed them all, destroying about 20 guns, 5 mortar batteries, 45 machine guns, about 800 enemy soldiers and officers. On the night of October 15-16, 1943, Kitschenko's platoon captured anonymous height and retained it until the main forces approached, reflecting fierce counterattacks of the enemy. Kitschenko in the battle received a concussion, but continued to fight [1] .
By decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of December 20, 1943, for "showing courage and heroism," Lieutenant Pavel Kitchenko was awarded the high title of Hero of the Soviet Union with the Order of Lenin and the Gold Star medal number 2741 [1] .
Later Kitchenko participated in the liberation of the Byelorussian SSR , Poland , battles in Germany . March 11, 1945 on the Oder, he was seriously wounded. After the war, Kitchenko continued his service in the Soviet Army. In 1949 he graduated from the Leningrad Higher Officer Officer Armored School. In 1960, with the rank of lieutenant colonel Kitchenko, he was dismissed. He lived in the town of Vasilkov, Kiev region , worked first as a fleet manager, then as a foreman at a local refrigerator factory. He died on February 24, 1973 [1] .
Honorary Citizen of Hlusk . He was also awarded two Orders of the Red Banner , the Order of the Patriotic War , 1st and 2nd degrees, along with a number of medals [1] .
The streets in Vasilkov and Kletsk were named in honor of Kitchenko [1] .
