Biography

He studied at the Tbilisi Conservatory , in 1954 he moved to Moscow, where he graduated from the Moscow Conservatory in two classes at once: piano under the direction of Goldenweiser in 1957 and classical composition under the direction of Khachaturian in 1962. After completing his education, he returned to Tbilisi, where he immediately began teaching at the Tbilisi State Conservatory; in 1965 he headed the piano department, in 1968 he became an assistant professor, in 1976 received the academic title of professor, and in 1984 he was appointed rector of the conservatory, holding this position until the end of his life. From 1973 to 1979 he was secretary of the Union of Composers of the Georgian SSR, and from 1996 to 1997 - chairman of the Union of Composers of Georgia. In 1986 received the State Prize of the Georgian SSR. For some time he was a guest lecturer at the Royal Hague Conservatory, often gave concerts, both in the USSR and in foreign countries, as a pianist, including with his own works. He died in Amsterdam, but was buried in Tbilisi.

In the 1960s, his repertoire included works by Stravinsky, Prokofiev, and in particular Bela Bartok , having done a lot to popularize the work of the latter in the USSR. In 1964 he created the satirical work “The Fable” (based on the Orbeliani fable) for the reader, three male voices and seven instruments with expressive means atypical for Georgian music, which in 1973 won an award at the UNESCO International Music Festival. According to critics, in this composition, sharply dissonant political content, motive variation, polyrhythmia and polymetry are combined with model and polyphony, which are more typical of West Georgian music. The later writings of Gabunia were already much simpler in language.

The composer's creative heritage includes musical compositions (chamber and vocal music), symphonies, instrumental concerts, including three piano, quartets, and sonatas for piano; was the author of music for a number of films, musicals and performances. One of his most famous works is the 2nd String Quartet (1982).

Gabunia is the first performer of the piano part in the famous Pianoforte Alfred Schnittke (September 1976 , together with the Georgian String Quartet).
