Jakob Schipper ( German: Jakob Schipper ; July 19, 1842 , Augustgroden - January 29, 1915 , Vienna ) - German and Austrian philologist, specialist in Anglo-Saxon dialects.

Biography
Jacob Schipper was born on July 19, 1842 in Augustgroden in the family of a farmer. He studied European languages in Bonn , Paris , Rome and Oxford .
In 1870-1871 he was an employee in a new revision of the dictionary of Anglo-Saxon dialects I. Bosworth (Oxford). In 1871 he was appointed professor in the Department of New Languages at the University of Koenigsberg , in 1877 he occupied the Department of English at the University of Vienna. In 1887 he was elected a member of the Austro-Hungarian Academy of Sciences. In 1901-1902 he was rector of the University of Vienna. He retired in 1913.
Main works: “De versu Marlovii” (Bonn, 1867); "Engl. Alexiuslegende. Version I ”(Strasbourg, 1877); "Engl. Alexinslegende. Version II "(Vienna, 1887); "William Dunbar, sein Leben und seine Gedichte" (Berlin, 1884); "Zur Kritik der Shakespeare-Bacon frage" (Berlin, 1898). His most significant work is Engl. Metrik "(Bonn, 1881-1889) and" Grundriss der engl. Metrik "(Vienna, 1895). In addition, he published Wiener Beiträge zur engl. Philologie ”(Vienna, 1895) and“ The Poems of William Dunbar ”(Vienna, 1891-1894), and also significantly contributed to the study of English in secondary schools in Austria-Hungary and had the title of Honorary Doctor from a number of British universities.
Jacob Schipper died on January 29, 1915 in the city of Vienna.
